Pondering Easter

The weeks leading up to the Passover were exciting times for the Israelites. They treated it with great respect, as it should have been. God instructed His children in exactly how to observe the Passover and what to say to their children about it in Exodus 12.

“Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants. 25 When you enter the land that the LORD will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. 26 And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ 27 then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’” Then the people bowed down and worshiped. 28 The Israelites did just what the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron.

Easter is our celebration of the final Passover Lamb, the One who gave the supreme sacrifice of His life so that we might live. He is currently preparing a place for us to live eternally with Him. What do we tell our children about why we celebrate Easter? Do we celebrate in such a way as to make them ask us what it means to us? As we enjoy the Easter Bunny, egg hunts, tons of candy (especially chocolate!), and new clothes, I pray we are careful to teach our children the True meaning of Easter, both in our actions and words. Happy Easter week!
